CANTWAREBURH:

Howard Myers

I was born and grew up in Canterbury, Kent. Leaving school at the age of 16, I joined the Kent Fire Brigade entering the residential fire service training academy for two years.  On completion, became a career fire fighter and spent service time in, Kent, Central and East London, the busiest areas for fire fighting. During a career spanning 23 years, I achieved the rank of (Temporary) Divisional Officer supervising 10 fire stations and 350 fire fighters that included fire prevention inspections, public relations, investigations, supervising major fires, Weapons of Mass Destruction and Hazmat incidents.

In 1968 I was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery, Chief Fire Officer’s Commendation for Bravery and in 1984, the Queen’s Fire Brigade Long Service and Good Conduct medal.

On leaving the fire service I joined a major leisure company, including the International Hilton Hotels, horse & dog race tracks, casinos, a major DIY retail group, assisted living facilities, holiday centres and office developments to provide fire prevention and health & safety advice and support in the UK, Europe and China.

In December 1989 I relocated to Florida where I had my own business.  The call of the fire service was too great so I attended the Florida Fire College in 1998  to qualify as a fire safety inspector and investigator and while there, was appointed Fire Marshal in the city of Port Orange.

I then spent the next 17 years as a fire & explosion investigator/fire risk assessor/fire safety management trainer in the public & private sector.  During that period conducted investigations in the USA states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Puerto Rico.  I have also been successful as an expert witness in numerous depositions. I have also been a fully certified accelerant/hydrocarbon detection canine handler.

Available throughout the World and UK, I am now residing in and working as a Fire Risk Assessor from Canterbury. (Canterbury is within easy reach of London, which is 1 hour via the High Speed rail service with links to all the major airports at Heathrow, Gatwick, City of London, Stanstead and Manston as well as all the home counties).

I am currently a member of:

Graduate of the Institution of Fire Engineers

Institute of Fire Risk Managers
Institute of Fire Prevention Officers
Worshipful Company of Firefighters

Previously certified with:

International Association of Arson Investigators

National Association of Fire Investigators (Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator - CFEI & Certified Fire & Explosion Investigator Instructor - CFEII)

ACCELERANT DETECTION K9 (Unfortuantely now deceased) RIP Kylie xx

My name is Kylie:  I am a nine year-old (born October 31, 2003) spayed female Black Labrador and was Proficiency Tested as an Accelerant Detection Canine through the Canine Accelerant Detection Association. My basic scent imprint is “Weathered Petrol” however; we (my handler Howard and me) like to get serious about training so I have learned to smell and recognize a lot more stuff. The initial “Traditional Pavlovian” training commenced when I was 11 months old at the Southern Star K9 Ranch in Florence, Texas. I first met my new handler when he was “trained” in September 2005. We did pretty well as a team and both graduated from the school.

Currently I am trained to detect 22 (twenty-two) accelerants; including 20 (twenty) ignitable liquids and 2 (two) solids - burned and unburned black powder. Putting this into perspective, I think I can detect the binary explosives used in domestic terrorism TATP (Triacetone Triperoxide) HMDT (Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine) and ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil) as they contain ingredients that I have been imprinted with.

Being pretty smart I picked up on firearms too. A firearm leaves gun shot residue (Black Powder) when fired. For maintenance it is usually cleaned with a solvent, again some of the ingredients I have been imprinted with.

Howard says I am very placid and it is good because I am a Passive Alert canine. He also says that because I love my food so much that it just came naturally for me to be a Food Reward canine. Singing my praises, it has been said that I possess the unique attributes of being placid, playful, affectionate, smart, adaptable, goofy and good at what I do all in one loveable package.
